MeePass Cell Phone Barcode App
A French company named MTag has created a software program called MeePass. The MeePass application is designed to be used on cell phones and other personal devices equiped with a camera. MeePass uses an encrypted QR Code that's different each time you pay for a product or service.
Here's how it works; you deposit money into your MeePass account (electronically via your bank or over the phone using a credit card) and update your MeePass software on your cell phone.
Whenever you want to pay for something, you log into your MeePass software on your cell phone using a secret PIN. The software program automatically creates a unique barcode that can be used to transact a payment.
The software program on your phone creates the barcode without having to dial anywhere or be connected to the internet; it's all done from within the program.
The amount you paid is then be subtracted from your MeePass account (whatever amount you had in your cell phone).
The MeePass system allows users to pay for items or services similar to using a debit card, the difference is you don't need to connect with any kind of institution.
You can add more money into your MeePass account and update your cell phone periodically to ensure you're ready to shop.
If you lose your cell phone, or if it gets stolen, there's no need to worry about someone creating a barcode as they would require your secret PIN to open MeePass.
Attempts to game the system by copying and reusing a barcode won't work either as each barcode created is only good for one purchase transaction.
It's an interesting program, and something banking institutions might offer in the future.
